These are instructions for generating the CSR (Certificate Signing Request) for Apache 2.
1) Log in to your server's terminal (SSH).
openssl req -new -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -keyout domainname.key -out domainname.csr
Replace domainname with the domain name you're securing. (ie, if your domain name is example.com, you would type example.key and example.csr.)
2) Enter as follows:
Common Name: The fully-qualified domain name, or URL, you're securing.
If you are requesting a Wildcard certificate, add an asterisk (*) to the left of the common name where you want the wildcard, for example *.domainname.com.
Organization: The legally-registered name for your business. (Business name)
Organization Unit: Department (ie IT)
City or Locality: Name of the city where your organization is registered/located. Do not abbreviate.
State or Province: Name of the state or province where your organization is located. Do not abbreviate.
Country: The two-letter International Organization for Standardization (ISO) format country code for where your organization is registered.
Do not enter the password in the passphrase, otherwise you will have to enter it any time you restart apache!
Open the CSR in a text editor and copy all of the text and you are done. You can use this CSR with any SSL provider.
